Modern audio broadcast processors strive to produce audio with consistent loudness and a specified dynamic range. In general a tight control on the output audio level is provided by an Automatic Gain Control (AGC) mechanism. As most of the other processing modules are tuned for a pre-defined signal level the attempt to maintain loudness at a desired level is not always successful or comes at the cost of excessive reduction in signal dynamic range. In this paper we present the components of a new multi stage Audio Loudness Control (ALC) algorithm, with each stage optimized to achieve a different objective, that is able to achieve tight control over loudness level while producing a more open and clean sounding audio.
