Stereo-to-Binaural Conversion Using Interaural Coherence Matching

Document Thumbnail

Using binaural room impulse responses (BRIRs) to render stereo signals for headphone playback adds natural binaural cues to stereo recordings. Disadvantages of this approach are coloration and additional reverberation due to imposing a room on the stereo recording. A method is proposed which adds natural binaural cues derived from head related transfer functions (HRTFs) to a stereo recording, avoiding some of the before-mentioned disadvantages of BRIR rendering. The stereo signal is decomposed into direct sound and ambient sound stereo signals with a novel perfect reconstruction separation method. The direct sound signal is rendered with HRTFs and the ambient sound signal is processed such that the frequency-dependent interaural coherence mimics that of a diffuse sound field.
