The Audio Engineering Society is delighted to welcome Jackson Browne and friends for a featured keynote event on October 30 at 3:30pm EDT as part of the AES Show Fall 2020 Convention. In this AES Show Special Event, titled “Let the Rhythm Lead: How the Chemistry of People and the Recording Process Fosters Inspiration,” legendary songwriter, recording artist and producer Jackson Browne leads a comprehensive and intimate roundtable conversation with musical collaborators Jenny Lewis, Jonathan Wilson and Paul Beaubrun, reflecting on their recent collaborative project Let The Rhythm Lead: Haiti Song Summit Vol. 1, and how to remain connected and authentic in our pursuits as music continues to take on a vital role in our lives. The event will be moderated by the Host and Moderator of the GRAMMY Museum’s Public Programs series, Scott Goldman.

The collaborative album Let the Rhythm Lead: Haiti Song Summit, Vol. 1, conceived by Jackson Browne, included singer-songwriters Jenny Lewis, Jonathan Russell and Jonathan Wilson; Haitian guitarist, bandleader and bass player Paul Beaubrun; Malian singer and guitar virtuoso Habib Koité; flamenco guitarist, musicologist and producer Raúl Rodríguez; and Haitian artists Lakou Mizik and Sanba Zao, as a benefit project for Artists for Peace and Justice and the Artists Institute of Jacmel, Haiti. Hailing from four different countries, interweaving North American Indie Rock with beats and percussion of Haitian Vodou, Spanish and Malian guitar, and Tres Flamenco, with songs in English, Creole, Khassonké, Manding and Spanish, Let the Rhythm Lead celebrates the work of Artists for Peace and Justice in Haiti, and was recorded at the Artists Institute on the island's southern coast, in the town of Jacmel.
For this AES Keynote event, Lewis, Wilson and Beaubrun will be joining Browne in the discussion and lending their insights on how the project unfolded, the importance of collaboration and the chemistry among the players, and the use and sharing of recording techniques with the audio students at the Artists Institute in Haiti – along with the universal language of music, which served to span cultures and distance to help bring change and innovation to those struggling with difficult circumstances.
About Jackson Browne
Jackson Browne has written and performed some of the most literate and moving songs in popular music and has defined a genre of songwriting charged with honesty, emotion and personal politics. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2004 and the Songwriter's Hall of Fame in 2007. His debut album came out on David Geffen's Asylum Records in 1972, and since then, he has released fourteen studio albums and four collections of live performances. Browne is currently working on a new studio album, set for release in March 2021.
Browne is known for his advocacy on behalf of the environment, human rights, and arts education. He's a co-founder of the groups Musicians United for Safe Energy (MUSE) and Nukefree.org and a member of the Ocean advocacy group Ocean Elders.
About Jenny Lewis
One of the most respected artists of her generation, singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, producer and composer Jenny Lewis started her career in Los Angeles. She appeared in films such as Troop Beverly Hills and The Wizard before she co-founded L.A.’s underground band Rilo Kiley in 1998. She has gone on to release four solo albums, is a member of The Postal Service, NAF, Artists for Peace and Justice and others. Lewis has collaborated and recorded with Elvis Costello, Beck, Bon Iver, Jackson Browne, Don Was, and Benmont Tench, to name a few. As a composer she has scored two motion pictures, Very Good Girls and Song One, and co-written original songs for Disney’s Bolt and for Meryl Streep’s performance in Jonathan Demme’s final film Ricki and The Flash. In 2019 her latest album, On The Line, received widespread critical acclaim, was named on many Best Albums Of The Year lists and featured Ringo Starr and Jim Keltner on drums.
About Jonathan Wilson
Jonathan Wilson is a singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and producer whose acclaimed solo albums have garnered accolades and awards from the likes of Billboard, Rolling Stone and beyond. His diverse recording styles and musical genres have most recently led him from his Los Angeles-based DIY recording roots to Nashville’s session-driven recording scene for his latest release, Dixie Blur, produced by Pat Sansone of Wilco and featuring premier session players including bass player Dennis Crouch, Russ Pahl on pedal steel, multi-instrumentalist Jim Hoke, and world renowned fiddle master Mark O’Connor. Other projects have included producing works for Father John Misty, Dawes, British folk legend Roy Harper, and Conor Oberst, as well as serving as musical director, guitarist and vocalist on the Roger Waters Us+Them tour.
About Paul Beaubrun
A scion of Haitian musical royalty, Paul has spent his life living to the beat, from his roots in the GRAMMY®-nominated band Boukman Eksperyans, to his move to New York as a youth where he was inspired by his heritage to begin crafting a sound all his own. Constantly aware of his roots, the struggle of an immigrant and the drive of New York life, Paul began to create a path where music, activism and history meet. His unique and transfixing sound he calls “Roots/Blues” weaves together his impeccable guitar skills, rich vocals, musical ingenuity and cultural history, all while performing a smooth melange of both English, French and Creole (the native tongue of his Haitian roots). In April 2020, Beaubrun released his much-anticipated live album Rasanbleman (Red Moon) with his band Zing Experience. The album features some of Haiti’s best talent including Michael Brun, Anie Alerte, J Perry, Mikaben, TROUBLEBOY HITMAKER, Gardy Girault, Jean Caze, Kanis and Kabysh. He has played alongside some of the world's top artists including Ms. Lauryn Hill, Maxwell, Arcade Fire, Jackson Browne and Bob Weir, reaching fans in venues around the globe while furthering awareness of Haitian art, culture and promoting the incredible talent of Haiti's youth.
About Scott Goldman
Since 2010, Goldman has served as the Host and Moderator of the GRAMMY Museum’s Public Programs series, conducting interviews with hundreds of artists from across the musical spectrum. He has also served as both the Artistic and Executive Director of the Museum, setting the curatorial direction for the institution. Since 2008 he has served as the principal researcher/writer and interviewer for the GRAMMY Museum’s Living Histories Project, conducting oral history interviews with legendary artists and executives in music. Goldman previously served in Executive positions with the charitable affiliates of the Recording Academy – The GRAMMY Foundation and the MusiCares Foundation – and served seventeen years directing the City of Hope’s philanthropic campaigns in the music industry. He has produced numerous high-profile, multi-artist events, and has written and produced tribute events to B.B. King, Gregg Allman and Iggy Pop (among many others). In addition to his work at the Museum, Goldman is currently writing and hosting a podcast for the Concord Music Group celebrating the 70th anniversary of Prestige Records.

The past, present and future of recording practices and technology continue to shape audio entertainment, giving listeners more choices than ever for enjoying recordings from the past 100-plus years in various formats. The AES Show Fall 2020 Convention Platinum Engineers Panel Special Event, “Recording – Then, Now and Future,” taking place Friday, October 30, at 1:00pm EDT, will take a look at some of the many techniques used in popular music over the years, and where those technologies are taking us. Producer/Engineer Jimmy Douglass will moderate a panel including Marcella Araica, Russell Elevado, Tony Visconti, and Joe Zook discussing recording in our new world and what will be carried forward from past challenges and successes in the recording studio.
Marcella Araica is a sought-after engineer who has mixed over 100 chart-topping tunes while working with world-renowned musical icons such as Beyoncé, Britney Spears, Madonna, Nelly Furtado, Usher, Will Smith and Missy Elliott, along with super producers Timbaland, Danja, and Polow Da Don. Her quick rise from an award-winning student at Full Sail University to interning at The Hit Factory and on to working with the biggest names in the music world have drawn industry attention, as she also continues work with independent label N.A.R.S. (New Age Rock Stars), founded in partnership with Danja, as well as projects at the newly built recording studio Dream Asylum Studios in Miami, FL.
Three-time GRAMMY® award-winning engineer and producer Russell Elevado started his studio career in 1986 interning at Shakedown Studios in NYC (owned by producer Arthur Baker). He is widely recognized for the sound he created for D’Angelo’s Voodoo, which he recorded and mixed and which earned him a GRAMMY Award for “Best R&B Album” in 2000, and another GRAMMY for “Best R&B Album” as engineer/mixer for D’Angelo’s Black Messiah album in 2016. His use of vintage recording equipment and analog tape combined with a modern approach to recording inspired by multiple genres has been sought after by collaborators such as Questlove, the Roots, Common, Alicia Keys, Jay-Z, Rick Rubin, Tony Visconti, Al Green, Angelique Kidjo, Roy Hargrove, Mark Ronson, Erykah Badu and J Dilla, to name a few artists in his 100-plus album discography.
Tony Visconti is a New York-based artist, producer and author, often noted for his career-spanning work with David Bowie, as well as groundbreaking recordings from T. Rex, Moody Blues and Thin Lizzy, among many others. As one of the most important pop producers in history, Visconti continues to work with a diverse mix of top artists, producing recent projects for Esperanza Spalding, Daphne Guinness, The Good, the Bad & the Queen, and Perry Farrell.

Catching the ears of an often-distracted audience is the superpower of a successful producer, which is the focus of this year’s AES Show Fall 2020 Platinum Producers Panel, set for October 29 at 6:00 pm EDT. Award-winning producers Fab Dupont, Julian Raymond and Ebonie Smith will take the virtual stage, moderated by music industry journalist and musician Michael Molenda, to discuss “Mysteries of the Formidable Hook – A Producers View on Creating Impact Through Songwriting, Technology and Sonic Textures.” These renowned participants will reveal how they deploy songwriting chops, audio-production strategies, fashion and style savvy, hook smarts, and other devices to make songs as compelling, commercial, and seductive as possible.
Fab Dupont is an award-winning NYC-based record producer and mixing engineer, in addition to playing, writing, producing and mixing music both live and in studios all over the world, as well as in his own FLUX Studios in the East Village of New York City. Dupont has received many accolades around the world, including wins at the Victoires de la Musique, South African Music awards, Pan African Music Awards, and U.S. independent music awards. He also has received several Latin GRAMMY® nominations and has worked on many Latin GRAMMY- and GRAMMY-nominated albums.
Julian Raymond is a multi-GRAMMY Award-winning and Academy Award-nominated record producer and songwriter. He arrived in Nashville from Los Angeles in 2014 to work with Scott Borchetta at Big Machine Label Group and currently serves as SVP of A&R at Big Machine/John Varvatos Records, where he is on two new rock projects with Badflower and Pretty Vicious, as well as work with a variety of country artists across the label. His work as the executive producer and composer for the documentary Glen Campbell: I’ll Be Me resulted in an Academy Award nomination in 2015 for his song “I’m Not Gonna Miss You.” He won the GRAMMY Award in 2015 for Best Country Song for “I’m Not Gonna Miss You” and was nominated for Best Compilation Soundtrack for Visual Media.
Ebonie Smith is an award-winning music producer, audio engineer and singer-songwriter based in New York City, and founder and president of Gender Amplified, Inc., an organization that celebrates and supports women and girls in music production and audio engineering. Smith received her first GRAMMY Certificate and RIAA-certified platinum plaque for work as an assistant engineer on Hamilton (Original Broadway Cast Recording). She received her second GRAMMY Certificate for work as an assistant engineer on Sturgill Simpson's award-winning album A Sailor's Guide to Earth. She also engineered on the GRAMMY-nominated albums Dirty Computer by Janelle Monáe and Invasion of Privacy by Cardi B.
Moderator for the panel, Michael Molenda, is the longest sitting Editor-in-Chief of Guitar Player magazine (1997-2018). During his tenure, Molenda founded Guitar Player's Guitar Superstar Competition, the Certified Legend Award, the Ronnie Montrose Rock the ation Award for Young Guitarists, and the Play It Forward charity and mentoring initiative. "Organizing Chaos: Top Engineers Discuss File Management" Panelists

Migrating to digital file-based audio has brought on a host of challenges in the organization and management of the burgeoning elements used to produce modern musical magic. “Once upon a time, engineers and their assistants just had to keep track of various reels of multi-track analog tapes, containing up to about 48 tracks per song, that were stored in easily labeled boxes,” begins the P&E Wing’s description of its AES Show Fall 2020 Audio Engineering Convention Special Event – open to all interested – “Organizing Chaos: Top Engineers Discuss File Management,” to be held online Thursday, October 22, at 3pm EDT. “Those boxes also included track sheets (!) which used a common language to explain what was on each track,” the description continues. “Of course, that’s ancient history. Now, the number of tracks is pretty much unlimited, many sessions have no assistants, and engineers use their own proprietary ways of file labeling and management. Often, chaos ensues.” The value of organized assets is being further illuminated as artists and labels increasingly look to repurpose legacy assets for new formats like Dolby Atmos® and to capitalize on unreleased materials. The panel will address the issues and recommend solutions.

He has worked with icons across multiple genres including the Eagles, Maren Morris, Taylor Swift, Don Henley, Shania Twain, Dan + Shay, Florida Georgia Line, Blake Shelton, BeBe Winans and Megadeth.
Chris Dennis is a multi-platinum engineer based out of Los Angeles, CA. After moving to California in 2015, he worked his way up through the legendary recording studios NightBird and Record Plant before eventually going freelance and working with Roddy Ricch in 2019. Dennis is now Ricch's full-time audio engineer for everything live and studio.
With a background in classical and jazz piano, Quentin “Q” Gilkey began his music career on the performance side. After studying engineering at the Conservatory of Recording Arts in Phoenix, Arizona, he interned at Ocean Studios in Los Angeles before landing as an engineer at Paramount Recording Studios. In 2010, Dr. Dre began working out of Paramount’s sister studio, Encore, with Q as an assistant engineer. Q soon began engineering for writers and producers at Dr. Dre’s record label, Aftermath Entertainment. In 2014, Q was promoted to lead engineer and has worked alongside Dr. Dre for the past eight years with all of the acclaimed artists on the producer’s roster, including Kendrick Lamar, The Game, Eminem and Anderson .Paak.
Ebonie Smith is an award-winning music producer, audio engineer and singer-songwriter based in New York City. She is also founder and president of Gender Amplified, Inc., an organization that celebrates and supports women and girls in music production and audio engineering. She has a degree in Broadcast Communication Arts from California State University, San Francisco, and has taught seminars on the theory and practice of recording for companies including ABC and CBS Television. She has also worked in both artist and studio management, was the longtime Los Angeles editor for Mix magazine, and has published three books related to recording. Her most recent, co-written with its subject, is Al Schmitt on the Record: The Magic Behind the Music, chronicling the life and career of the most awarded recording engineer in history.

A message from AES President Agnieszka Roginska
Dear Student Members:
I hope this message finds you safe and healthy wherever you are in the world.
The unprecedented nature of 2020, which not only forced our European Convention in May to be virtual but our US Convention this October as well, has made it impossible to hold Student Delegate Assembly Officer elections as we normally would at this time of the year. Our SDA election process relies heavily on the in-person nature of conventions, to allow prospective Officers to make their case during the SDA sessions for why they should be elected. We believe it simply is not a process that should be conducted virtually in fairness to everyone involved.
In light of that development, Alex Dempsey and Hannah Gallop have agreed to remain on the SDA for another year. We are truly grateful for their commitment to AES and the SDA.
It is very hard to say exactly what 2021 will hold. As plans come together for the events that will be permitted to take place next year, we will keep you up-to-date on SDA elections and activities.

AES Show Student Week education and career events will take place October 19 — 23
— New virtual format allows for a broader range of students and educators to connect in innovative ways during dedicated Student Week events —
Working in a new virtual environment to educate and promote advances in audio science and technology, the Audio Engineering Society invites students and educators to attend the AES Show Student Week, being held October 19 – 23 as part of its Audio Engineering Month events. Once again, the AES Show will place a high priority on the education and enlightenment of tomorrow’s audio professionals, offering a slate of activities designed to connect audio students and educators in meaningful and lasting ways. Events will include exclusive Technical Program content, meetings and events hosted by the AES Student Delegate Assembly (SDA), a virtual Education and Career Fair, student competitions, student project critiques and more. AES Show Fall 2020 Convention All Access registration is just $99 for AES Student Members for the full access to AES Show and Audio Engineering Month events. AES Show Student Week Partners are Audio-Technica, Genelec, IK Multimedia, and the Recording Academy Producers and Engineers Wing.
Several highlights of AES Show Student Week include the Student Recording Competitions in six categories (Traditional Acoustic Recording, Traditional Studio Recording, Modern Studio Recording & Electronic Music, Sound for Visual Media, Remix, and Immersive Audio); the Saul Walker Student Design Competition sponsored by API (gear and software); and the MathWorks-sponsored MATLAB Plugin Competition, where students use MathWorks MATLAB software to create a VST plugin effect that meets an audio production need by offering content creators new technical and/or aesthetic possibilities or addresses existing technical and/or aesthetic limitations. Student competition projects are critiqued and judged by a host of industry professionals, offering a great learning opportunity for participants and observers. Livestreamed Student Mix Critique sessions will provide non-competitive professional input and advice for students at all stages of training. In addition, the AES Student Delegate Assembly (SDA) will host several organizational and planning sessions. Open to all, the Education and Career Fair will feature educational offerings and job opportunities from leading institutions and companies from around the world. All Access registration also lets students attend all AES Show Technical Program sessions, Keynote addresses, Papers, Engineering Briefs, TechTours and other content, along with live- and on-demand presentations from AES Show partners.
Education Committee co-chair John Krivit notes that as a benefit of the Convention going online, with no travel required, students from all over the world are taking part in the various competitions and critique sessions. “When we first took these sessions virtual for AES Virtual Vienna, we had more students than ever enter the competitions and take part in the Critiques. Now, with Student Week as part of Audio Engineering Month, all AES Show Fall 2020 Convention All Access registrants can check out these compelling events without missing any of the Convention’s Technical Program – come join us!”

The AES Show Fall 2020 Convention is set to take attendees beyond the normal boundaries and limits of the usual local onsite events with the latest series of AES Convention TechTours, dubbed “7 Audio Wonders of the World,” sponsored by AES Show Partner Amazon Devices. Curated by AES Show Fall 2020 TechTours Chair John Krivit, this year’s TechTours will offer a series of exclusive virtual walking tours of top facilities across the globe, including the inaugural tour of Skywalker Sound with GRAMMY®-winning producer/engineer Leslie Ann Jones, Director of Music Recording and Scoring, Skywalker Sound. This first edition of “7 Audio Wonders of the World,” to debut Thursday, October 8 at 12:00pm EDT, and the two subsequent tours, are free to all AES Show attendees, with premium All Access registration required for the final four tours.
Traditionally, AES Show TechTours have offered a behind-the-scenes look at top recording studios and production facilities within the show’s local reach, with a limited number of spots available for attendee participation. The Village Studios, Los Angeles, CA (October 22)
A full-service recording, mixing and live performance complex housed in a vintage 1920’s Masonic Temple in West L.A., the Village Studios is famous for landmark sessions by music’s legends across six decades. The Village is where “vintage gear heaven” meets state-of-the-art technology, accommodating orchestras, film scores, rock bands, hip-hop & pop artists – all the way down to single-mic recordings such as voiceovers, audio books and podcasts.
Blackbird Studios, Nashville, TN (October 27)
Founded in 2002 by sound engineer John McBride and his wife, country artist Martina McBride, Blackbird has become one of Nashville's preeminent sound studios. The Blackbird complex now includes nine studios and houses The Blackbird Academy, a post-secondary audio engineering school. Driven by a passion for great audio, Blackbird boasts an attentive, professional staff and a gear inventory second to none.
Abbey Road Studios, London, UK (October 29)
Abbey Road Studios is one of the most famous recording studios in the world and a global music icon (a band named the Beatles had something to do with building that reputation). Originally a nine-bedroom house built in 1829, it was purchased in 1928 by the Gramophone Company, who went on to build the world’s first purpose-built recording studio. The St John’s Wood address was chosen for its large garden and ideal location – close enough to the performance spaces of the time, but away from the noise and vibrations of the traffic and trains.
United Recording Studios, Los Angeles, CA (October 29)
Bill Putnam opened United Recording Studios in 1957, and it quickly became one of the most legendary recording facilities in the world. With his uncompromising standards, technical brilliance and unparalleled knowledge of acoustics, Putnam built studios that sound like no other. Located on Sunset Boulevard, these magnificent studios have attracted the biggest names in recording history.
Capitol Studios, Los Angeles, CA (October 30)
Since its completion in 1956, Capitol Studios has been a staple of the recording industry. Iconic artists like Frank Sinatra, Nat King Cole and The Beach Boys first made musical history in its rooms, and to this day, major icons of popular music continue in their wake. Capitol Studios was recently fully refurbished to ensure that it remained a cutting edge, state-of-the-art facility where artisan craft can continue to thrive as it has for the past 60 years.
