The Historical Committee will have an open meeting at the
111th (New York) Convention on Sunday, 2001 Dec 02 from 12:00 to 14:00,
in the "When Vinyl Ruled" exhibit room, 3D-02. You are all invited
to attend.
We solicit your suggestions both for interviewers and for further interviewees for our oral-history interviews, especially for countries outside of the US.
We do not now have any items that require BOG action.
The presently active AES Historical Committee projects [as numbered in our Guidelines] are as follows:
5 [Create a "History of the AES" subcommittee, to organize and maintain an archive relating to the history of the Audio Engineering Society itself, ...]
Since these historical materials are at AES HQ, we have asked Roger Furness to lead this project, and he has accepted this post. We plan to start work on organizing this project during this Convention.
The Japanese Chapter of the AES has written a "History of the AES
Japan Chapter", and we have a volunteer working on translating this
history from Japanese into English. They have sent us a pdf file of the
Japanese version of their history, and we will be posting this, and the
translation (when it is done) on our website..
6 [Cooperate with existing libraries, archives, and museums; and with
other professional organizations
with related interests...]
Irv Joel, oral history project leader, has established a liaison
with David Morton, of the IEEE History Center at Rutgers University,
in New Brunswick, NJ , and we will be exchanging with them links to interviews
with audio engineers, as well as ideas about oral histories (they distribute
only transcripts of interviews; we want to distribute the video-taped interviews).
8 [Encourage each Local Section and each Convention Committee to organize an appropriate session on the history of audio engineering, or a display on an appropriate historical subject. When requested, provide information to help them to do so.]
A "Historical Cafe" was presented at the 110th Convention in Amsterdam, under the leadership of Stan Tempelaars.
AESHC members under the leadership of Irv Joel have organized a historical
exhibit for the 111th Convention in New York ("When Vinyl Ruled",
building
on the exhibit at the 109th Convention). For

12 [Devise a catalog for classifying the inventions and developments made in audio engineering, based on the work of HK Thiele.]
HK Thiele's documents have gone to the TU Berlin, where Prof. Manfred
Krause and his students are organizing them. This project continues.
13 [Record oral histories (sound only, sound with video, and/or sound with still photographs) of important figures in the history of audio engineering.]
The HC web page has a link to the description of the oral history project, which in turn has links to the list of completed interviews, and the list of recommended interviewees. We solicit your suggestions both for interviewers and for further interviewees, especially for countries outside of the US.
Irv Joel has recorded 5 more video-taped oral-history interviews since the 110th (Amsterdam) Convention, and plans to record 16 more interviews at this (111th) Convention.
The editing work by Irv Joel and Patrick Tamby on an Apple editing system
with a Mac G4 and Final Cut Probe software continues.
