Matthew Boerum is an award winning audio engineer and educator currently pursuing a Ph.D in Sound Recording at McGill University. His research focuses on auditory listener movement in virtual audio environments as applied to virtual/augmented reality, with a special interest in audio mixing perception. He holds an MA and BS in Audio Technology from American University.
Since 2000, his work as an freelance engineer, educator and musician has lead him to nearly every audio industry discipline. Of notable mention, he has worked with Grammy award winning artists Cee Lo Green and Dirty Vegas; Golden Globe winning actor Stacy Keach; and public figures US President Carter and the Dalai Lama. In 2012 he was awarded an Emmy for Outstanding Commercial - Single Spot and received front page honors in the press by Audio Solutions with additional press coming online and in Mix Magazine.
Matthew began his academic career as an audio educator after receiving his BS degree in 2005. His work at American University was essential to the growth and success of the Audio Technology Program, multiple departments and university projects including American University's acclaimed marketing and branding campaign and the Audio Technology Recording Studios. He has developed undergraduate courses, led major academic initiatives and served on multiple committees. As an academic, Matthew believes strongly in the power of innovation to improve education.
In 2014, Matthew moved to Montreal to pursue his doctorate degree and has continued his career as an educator teaching multiple courses for the McGill Sound Recording Program. He is currently working with Play Hybrid, a virtual reality gaming content creator as the Director of Audio Engineering and Research. Matthew is also the CEO and co-founder of Audible Reality, Inc., a virtual reality audio technology company; and a founding member of Enhanced Reality Audio at McGill University.
Matthew is a voting member of the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences (NARAS) and a student member of the Audio Engineering Society (AES) and Center for Interdisciplinary Research in Music Media and Technology (CIRMMT).
