The Audio Engineering Society is pleased to announce its second International Conference on Audio for Virtual and Augmented Reality. This conference will gather research scientists, engineers, VR and AR developers and content providers to explore and discuss topics such as: spatial audio capture, rendering and synthesis over headphones and loudspeakers; binaural, ambisonics and wave field synthesis techniques; 3D sound field navigation; HRTF modeling and derivation from optical and/or acoustic measurements; reverb and room acoustics synthesis; 3D audio mixing and content production; and sound design for VR/AR, and best practices.

The three-day conference program will focus around the dissemination of top-level research in the field of spatial audio for virtual and augmented reality, and discussion of technical solutions and recommended practices. In addition to the paper and poster sessions, the conference will also consist of invited presentations from key researchers, practitioners and industry leaders, demonstrations, panel discussions, tutorials, and workshops. The arena of virtual and augmented reality is highly interactive and multi- disciplinary and as such, we would like the conference to reflect this. We welcome submissions in all relevant audio-related areas including but not limited to the following:

Proposed topics

Research in audio for augmented and virtual reality:
  • Binaural capture and rendering over headphones and loudspeakers (dummy head equalization, crosstalk-cancellation)
  • HRTF modeling and derivation from optical and/or acoustic measurements
  • Multichannel (wave field synthesis, ambisonics)
  • 3D sound field navigation
  • Object-based audio
  • Virtual environment modeling (synthetic sound fields, reverberation)
  • Spatial audio quality, compression, and streaming
  • Spatial perception and psychoacoustics
  • Listening tests and evaluation
Implementation, recording, production, and content creation:
  • Audio capture and synthesis (recording, synthetic sound fields)
  • Audio production for VR/AR (3D mixing, mastering, effects, tools, software)
  • Sound design for VR/AR
  • Music composition for VR/AR
  • AR/VR audio in streaming and broadcast (Television, Radio, IP) applications
  • Telepresence and live AR/VR audio production
  • Applications in VR/AR (case studies)
  • Developing Audio Standards for VR/AR Applications

Submission information

All submissions should have a clear connection with audio for virtual and augmented reality. Content should reflect the scientific and creative progress made and highlight relevant contributions or conclusions to attendees. We encourage multidisciplinary approaches to the area and an exploration of the interactions between content creators, engineers and the audience as well as relationships between theory and practice.

Submissions may be in the form of paper, workshop or tutorial. All proposals are to be submitted at http://www.aes.org/2018avar_authors.

Papers

Paper proposals should initially consist of title, abstract (60 to 120 words), and précis (500 to 750 words), followed later by a full and complete paper, once accepted. Alternatively, authors may submit a full paper for peer review from the outset. Acceptance of papers will be determined by the committee based on peer review. To better accommodate authors' schedules, we are accepting submissions in two groups. For Group 1, the paper submission deadline is: April 1, 2018.  Authors of accepted précis submissions will be notified by May 1, 2018. Authors of accepted full paper submissions will be notified by May 15, 2018. For Group 2, the paper submission deadline is: May 1, 2018.  Authors of accepted précis submissions will be notified by June 1, 2018. Authors of accepted full paper submissions will be notified by June 15, 2018. For all accepted submissions, final manuscripts of a maximum of 10 pages (3000 words) must be submitted by July 15, 2018. Please contact [email protected] if you have any queries about paper submissions.

Tutorials and workshops

Tutorials and workshops will complement the conference paper sessions by providing panel discussions, presentations and lectures led by experts in the field. These events will provide in-depth yet practical discussions related to audio for virtual and augmented reality while demonstrating the application of science in real-world scenarios. Tutorial and workshop proposals should include: title, abstract (60 to 120 words), and précis (500 to 750 words). The précis should include the number and names of presenters involved, format of the presentation (single presenter, panel, round-table, etc.), duration of the presentation, what attendees may need to bring (laptop, headphones, etc.), a list of topics to be covered, and a set of learning objectives. The tutorial and workshop submission deadline is May 31, 2018. Notices of accepted tutorials and workshops will be sent out on June 15, 2018. Please contact [email protected] if you have any queries about tutorial/workshop submissions.

Publication

Papers will be published online in the AES E-Library no earlier than 10 days before the event.

Page charges

If a paper is longer than 10 pages, the author will be charged a fee of $25 for every page over 10.

Registration

A reduced registration fee will be available for authors. At least one author of each contribution must pay to register for the conference, and attend to present. The authors’ rate will be available for any author wishing to attend the conference.
